Lateral open bite is defined as lack of contact between the posterior teeth when lower jaw is in centric occlusion with the upper. Several possible causes of posterior open bite: failure of teeth eruption so that the expected amount of eruption does not occur, patient having a lateral tongue thrust, or patient having ankylosed on either upper or lower posterior teeth. Treatment of lateral openbite depends on the severity of the case and wearing retainers is very critical in the long-term stability of lateral openbite treatment.
Progress of a patient with lateral openbite, unilateral crossbite, skeletal asymmetry, strong tongue thrust is being treated without extraction nor surgery
Patient with bilateral openbite, tongue thrust is treated without extraction
