A diastema is a space or gap between two teeth. It appears most commonly between the upper central incisors. Diastema can result from an oversized labial frenum that extends from the inside of the upper lip to between the two front teeth. If this happens, it blocks the natural closing of the space between these teeth. Orthodontist often recommends having this frenum remove after the active orthodontic treatment phase by a procedure called frenectomy.
